The Story of Kayaköy Ghost Village

4 min read

Share

The site of today’s Kayaköy ghost village was, until 1923, a thriving Greek settlement known as “Levissi”. In this village, home to thousands of people, the streets rang with the voices of children and the craftsmen’s workshops with the sounds of hard work.

With their striking architecture, the houses of Levissi were built in harmony with the hillside so that none blocked another’s view or light. This layout reflects the way of life and the sense of community of the time.

The population exchange between Türkiye and Greece, signed after the War of Independence, changed the fate of the area completely. While the Greek population emigrated to Greece, Turkish families from Thessaloniki and the surrounding region were resettled here.

However, the newcomers were never fully able to adapt to the terrain and living conditions of the stone houses on the hillside. Over time the village was abandoned and nature began to reclaim the buildings. As doors, roofs and wooden details disappeared, Levissi gradually took on the appearance of the Kayaköy ghost village we see today.

What to Do in Kayaköy’s Historic Stone Streets

As soon as you step into Kayaköy’s stone streets, you feel as if you are somewhere outside of time. This is not a place to rush through; its atmosphere invites you to pause and reflect at every corner.

Walking through the narrow streets, you can see the remains of hearths, niches and traces of everyday life inside the old houses. Especially in the soft light of the day, the shadows cast by the stone walls create a deeply evocative atmosphere.

For keen photographers, sunset is the ideal time. The light filters through the windows of the stone houses, creating a powerful visual contrast.

For those wanting a different experience in the area, a horse riding tour is also among the most popular activities. Horse rides along the natural trails around Kayaköy offer the chance to discover both the nature and the historic atmosphere from a different perspective.

There are two important buildings in Kayaköy that you really must see: the Upper Church (Taksiyarhis) and the Lower Church (Panagia Pirgiotissa). These are significant remains that reflect the architectural aesthetics and religious life of the period.

At the end of your visit, a short walk up towards the hilltop rewards you with views of both Kayaköy and Soğuksu Bay on the other side at the same time. This is one of the most impressive viewpoints in the area.

After your visit, you can take a break at the local businesses at the village entrance and try some regional specialities.

Getting There and Practical Tips

Getting to Kayaköy ghost village is very easy. By car, it is a journey of about 15–20 minutes from Fethiye town centre. Along the way, a winding but enjoyable route lined with pine trees awaits you.

For those who prefer public transport, dolmuş minibuses run regularly from Fethiye centre to Kayaköy via Hisarönü. Services are more frequent in the summer months in particular.

A few important things to bear in mind before your visit:

  • Footwear: Kayaköy has stony, uneven ground. Comfortable trainers with non-slip soles are recommended.
  • When to Visit: It can get very hot around midday. Early morning or the hours close to sunset are more comfortable.
  • Entry: The site has the status of an archaeological site and there is an entrance fee. Müze Kart (Museum Pass) holders can benefit from advantageous entry.

Staying in the Shadow of History

For most visitors, the atmosphere of Kayaköy ghost village deserves more than just a few hours. Watching the morning mist rise between the stone houses and feeling the cool of the pine forests in the evening are among the most special experiences the area has to offer.

This is why the area around Kayaköy has become very popular for accommodation in recent years. Stone and timber villas in harmony with nature offer alternatives designed without harming the character of the area.
